Lewis Krauthamer, composer
Bio
Lewis Krauthamer is a composer, professor, pianist and author. He was born in New York and grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. As an undergraduate, he studied composition at the New England Conservatory and the Longy School of Music, finishing at Longy. He pursued graduate studies in France, receiving a Master’s of Music in Musicology from the Université Jean Monnet in Saint-Étienne. Lewis has received numerous awards as a composer, including grants from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts and Meet the Composer. Lewis’s article, “An Analysis of Two Large-Scale Works by Christian Wolff,” is published in Perspectives of New Music, vol. 55, no. 1 (Winter, 2017).
Since 2014, Lewis has served on the faculty of the University of the District of Columbia, where he teaches music theory, analysis, orchestration, music history, chamber music, piano, and accompanies/coaches vocal students. Additionally, he maintains a private studio, teaching piano students of all ages, backgrounds, levels, and styles. Lewis is an active part of the DC area new music community. He works frequently with Rhizome DC, producing performances and promoting collaboration. Since 2016, he has directed the Off the Beaten Path (OBP) concert series, in connection with Rhizome DC and the University of the District of Columbia College of Arts and Sciences.
